Shiko Munakata was a Japanese artist born in 1903 in Aomori, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. He was known for his woodblock print works that often depicted traditions of his native Aomori, nature, folk festivals, Shinto kami, and Buddhist religious imagery. His art was influenced by the sōsaku-hanga and mingei movements, and he was inspired by artists like Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries Hiratsuka Unichi, Yanagi Sōetsu, and Kōshirō Onchi. Munakata passed away in 1975 in Tokyo, Japan. He lived and worked in Tokyo, Japan. His work "Two Buddhist Saints and Ten Great Disciples of the Buddha (12 works)" on woodcut, on scroll was sold for $986,490. He was honored with the Prize of Excellence, the Order of Culture, first prize at the São Paulo Bienal Exhibition, and the Grand Prix at the Venice Biennale. His works are exhibited in the Brooklyn Museum, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Munakata once described his medium: "Like the vastness of space, like a universe unlimited, untold, unattainable, and inscrutable- that is the woodcut.".
